Acupuncture and Mental Health
At the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine, it is our goal to incorporate all pathways to wellness into our treatments for depression, anxiety, and overall mental wellness. We are proud to offer multiple forms of acupuncture at our medical wellness center in Delray Beach, Florida
Acupuncture at DCIM can be used as a separate, holistic approach to preventing numerous health problems, or can be incorporated into a mental health treatment plan as an adjunct to traditional western medicine. The practice has been a major component of eastern medicinal practices for over two thousand years, and in recent years, modern scientific studies have provided evidence supporting the benefits for many health conditions. Raul J. Rodriguez, MD, Founder & Medical Director of the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine, and his multidisciplinary team incorporate acupuncture into their comprehensive treatment plans for anxiety, depression and addiction, among others.
Acupuncture has shown to be effective in helping to treat several physical ailments, including headaches & migraines, fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, and menstrual pain & irregularities. In addition, it is also effective in detoxifying from certain medications, smoking cessation, pain management, addiction withdrawal symptoms, stress, anxiety, and insomnia. For individuals who are not comfortable with traditional needles, the Delray Center also offers alternative non-needle treatments using Chinese Medical Massage (Tui Na), micro-current, and cupping.
Types of Acupuncture Offered at the Delray Center:
This form is typically recommended for most physical ailments, such as chronic or acute pain relief. During an appointment, threadlike, sterilized needles are inserted into the skin at specific acupressure points that exist all over the body. These penetrating needles stimulate the nerves located in these acupressure points. It is believed that the stimulation created by acupuncture affects our bodies’ neurohormonal pathways, causing the body to release endorphins to alleviate pain or stress. Studies also suggest that acupuncture reduces pro-inflammatory agents in the body. In addition, it has been shown to enhance the effects of certain western medications, specifically fertility drugs.
Auricular (ear) acupuncture involves the insertion of needles at acupressure points within the ear. The nerve stimulation caused within the ear is believed to have a healing effect on other parts of the body, and to provide unique relief for a number of conditions. Auricular acupuncture has famously been used for decades as an alternative treatment for addiction and opioid withdrawal, and is known to lessen withdrawal symptoms for individuals detoxing from drug dependency. In addition, this form can be used to help with smoking cessation, and can be used to treat mental health issues such as anxiety or insomnia.
